What is PCNL?

The percutaneous nephrolithotomy procedure is ideal for patients with larger kidney stones. An incision of around 1 cm in the skin. The PCNL procedures allow you to take out around 15mm or even stronger stones. Sometimes, a better approach is required, and the doctor might suggest MINI PCNL.

The PCNL surgery requires use of general anesthesia. To begin with the treatment, the surgeon performs a cystoscopy. The procedure requires passing a thin, lighted telescope through urine and seeing the ureter and bladder area.   • The presence of blood in the urine and color might look light pink to reddish. If you have severe bleeding, please visit the doctor for a medical emergency.

After-care tips when you go home with a ureteral stent

  • The ureteral stent is a small plastic tube placed in the urinary tract
    for swelling control and drain urine.
  • On your follow-up appointment, around 14 days after surgery the doctor removes it.
  • It’s normal to feel fullness with the constant need to urinate. Additionally, there’s a burning sensation when you try to urinate and move.

  • Organ or tissue injury: There’s slight possibility surrounding organs or tissues get injured. The possible injuries occur to the spleen, liver, lung, pancreas, bowel, or gallbladder.
